How to Use a Watchlist

A watchlist is a list of symbols used to quickly reference a group of stocks.

Opening a Watchlist

A watchlist can opened by a number of different means.  "Menu Circle" ==> "New" ==> "Watchlist" or  "Main Menu" ==> "Components" ==> "Watchlist".

You can also get a watchlist added to the left side of the workspace by choosing a layout with a workspace.  See "How To Use Workspaces".

When you open a watchlist you will see a window like below.

The watchlist is a simple structure consisting of a symbol and a tag field but there is much you can do with it.  It also has three menus, 1) a  toolbar at the top of the window,  2) a slideshow toolbar just below that, and 3) a right click menu.

Adding Symbols to the Watchlist

The quickest way to add some symbols is to use the window top toolbar pull down and choose one of the predefined symbol lists.

Choosing one of these will populate the window with the saved list.  You can also open a watchlist by right clicking in the window and choosing "File" ==> "Open".

Use the right click menu in the watchlist to make a new watchlist.  The four options needed are in the symbol section of the right click menu as well as being available from the window top menu.

Clear - This will remove all symbols and columns from the watchlist.

Add Symbol - This will add symbols to the end of the list. Clicking on this brings up the Add Symbol Window.

Enter in each symbol and press enter or click Add, then click done when you are done.

Insert Symbol - This works just like the "Add Symbol" but instead of adding to the end of the list, the new symbols will be added just above the symbol you right clicked on for the right click menu.  If you use the top menu for this it will insert the new symbols above the symbol last clicked on (the one with an arrow in the row header).

Delete Symbol - Left clicking on this menu selection will delete the symbol under the mouse when you right clicked to get the menu.  If you use the top menu for this it will delete the symbol last clicked on (the one with an arrow in the row header).

Saving a Watchlist

The are two basic options for saving a watchlist

Save  - "Right click menu" ==> "File" ==> "Save". This will save the current watchlist and allow you to get it a name.

Save and Append - "Right click menu" ==> "File" ==> "Save and Append".  This append the current symbol list to the saved file and save the totaled result.

Linking the Watchlist

A new watchlist will be linked to the active chart but you can control which charts are linked to the watchlist.  You can call up the link menu by using "Right Click Menu" ==> "Link" or click "Link" in the top menu.  This will bring up the link window.

Click on the charts you want to link to the Watchlist.  The names in the link window will match the names in the chart window title bars.  When you have linked the window you want with a check mark, click close.

Using the Watchlist

Click the Symbol - The easiest way to use the watchlist is to just click the symbol in the list with the left mouse button.

The linked chart(s) will change to the clicked symbol.

Drag and Drop the Symbol - This does not use the linked chart list, so you can use this If you want to change a single chart whether linked or not.  Hold the left mouse button down over the row header of the symbol you want to use.  The cursor will change to a cross when you can left click and use the drag and drop.

While holding the left mouse button down drag the mouse over a the chart you want to change and then drop the symbol by releasing the left mouse button.  The chart will change to the dropped symbol.

Use the Space Bar -  If you press the space bar on the keyboard, the active row in the watchlist will move to the next symbol and then display it in the linked charts.

Use the VCR controls in the Slideshow Toolbar - You can move around the list with mouse using these buttons.

The buttons are described in the order they appear in the toolbar.

First - Clicking this button will move the active row to the first symbol in the list and display it in the chart.

Previous - Clicking this button will move the active row to the previous symbol in the list and display it in the chart.

Next - Clicking this button will move the active row to the next symbol in the list and display it in the chart.

Last - Clicking this button will move the active row to the last symbol in the list and display it in the chart.

Run a Slideshow

The last three buttons and the number box on the slideshow toolbar will run an automated slideshow.

The buttons are described in the order they appear in the toolbar.

Play - This will start the slideshow. The first symbol will be shown in the linked charts, then the program will wait the number of seconds in the number box, then request the next symbol in the list.  This will continue until the complete list has been requested.

Stop - This will stop the automatic display of charts by Play.

Pause - This the temporarily stop the automatic display of charts by Play.  Pressing play will resume the slideshow from where it was paused.

Seconds - This box is number of second to wait between requesting the next chart in the list.
